At the Breach, the player can talk with NPCs to obtain their service, or can spend an in-game currency acquired from defeating bosses to unlock new items that randomly appear in the Gungeon. Once encountered, NPCs either set up shop inside the Gungeon, or travel to the Breach, a hub world. Īs the player progresses through multiple playthroughs, they may encounter non-player characters (NPCs) inside the Gungeon. Enter the Gungeon has a permadeath system, and if the player dies, they must start again at the first floor. Each level of the game has a random boss, which fill the room with various patterns of bullets that the player must dodge killing the boss will allow the player to advance to the next floor. Some enemies also drop keys upon dying, which can be used on chests to unlock them. By defeating enemies, players obtain an in-game currency called bullet casings, which can be spent at shops inside the Gungeon.
Weapons can range from conventional pistols and rifles, to more exotic firearms such a unicorn horn that fires rainbows or a mailbox that shoots envelopes. To defeat Gundead, the player must use a wide variety of guns and items they can be obtained by unlocking chests, or through shops and boss fights. Enemy creatures are called Gundead, and are bullet-shaped in appearance. The layout, enemies, and rewards of each level are procedurally generated. The Gungeon is made up of five different floors, each having roughly twenty rooms inside. To protect themselves against enemy fire, players can knock over tables to provide cover, or can use consumable "Blanks" to delete enemy projectiles in the room. Each Gungeoneer also has their own special items and weapon which can be used in the Gungeon, such as a lockpick that can open chests. The Gungeoneers can all shoot and switch between equipped guns, and can dodge attacks by performing a dodge roll, which allows them to be temporarily invulnerable to damage. The player takes control of one of four characters, collectively called the "Gungeoneers", who must reach the bottom of the titular Gungeon to find the gun that can kill the past.
